Set in the centre of Mangawhai village, Dune Cafe is 'the spot' for locals and holiday makers to enjoy a relaxing brunch, lunch and dinner. We offer our customers the true essence of Northland with a relaxed setting, meals made using locally farmed meat, seasonal locally sourced seafood and fresh organic produce delivered daily direct from our very own farm 'The Vege Shack' in Maungakaramea. Our head chef designs the menu around these fresh ingredients to provide an array of enticing options including sharing plates. We also offer healthy smoothies for the kids that include some surprises from our Vege Shack, along with cocktail specials and happy hour on Fridays.

At Dune and all our sister restaurants - The Cove, No8 - Town Basin, The Quay, Fire and No8 - The Mount we really do have it covered so there's always a reason to call in and enjoy our hospitality - come and taste the difference!

Our Story

The Great Highgate Trading Company Ltd was formed to manage the restaurant and farming ventures of Lloyd Rooney and Mike Fraser. The group has grown from a single restaurant, The Cove in Waipu Cove, and their beef and sheep farm, Highgate Hill in the Waikato to now include The Quay in Whangarei and The Dune in Mangawhai. Our farming ventures have also grown in recent months to include a market garden, The Vege Shack, in Maungakaramea near Whangarei in Northland.

The Quay to the Cove Cookbook

It’s a cookbook with a personal story, tracing the background of charismatic British entrepreneur Lloyd Rooney and his partner Mike Fraser, who have now just opened there 4th restaurant together in NZ.

Together they have the Cove in Waipu, an iconic cafe that made the top 100 eateries in NZ last year - The Quay in Whangarei, The Dune in Mangawhai and now Number 8 in Whangarei.

We are currently in the process of writing our second cookbook which will touch on the lives and recipes of our 6 amazing head chefs.
